and the show goes on! All four schools are working on our mutual project, filming, writing etc.

The next project meeting will be held in Genk in November. We are looking forward to meeting our friends there!

OTAVA SCHOOL ON HOLIDAY

All Finnish school children start their summer holiday today, May 31st.
We start school again on August 11th after a refreshing break.

You still have some busy weeks to go before your holiday starts. The pupils and staff of Otava school wish to thank all their friends in Belgium and Spain for the past school year. We will go on with the project with new energy in September.

The pupils and staff of Otava school wish to thank all the visitors from Belgium and Spain. We had four memorable days with you! The visit brought the project to a much more personal level to all of us.

Comenius meeting in Finland

The next Comenius meeting will be held in Otava, Mikkeli in mid February. There will be eleven visitors altogether from the four partnership schools. All the pupils and teachers of Otava school are looking forward to meeting the foreign guests! You will learn more about this visit at these pages later on.

Spain

Pan con tomate: This simple but delightful combination of toasted bread and tomatoes is a classic Catalan tapa served before the meal. In every village and restaurant in Spain, they make a simple tapa called "pan con tomate", bread with tomatoes. Thick slabs of country-style bread are toasted over a wood fire until lightly golden. The bread is rubbed with garlic, tomato halves are smeared all over the toast (tomato pulp will rub off onto bread), drizzled with extra-virgin olive oil, and sprinkled with coarse salt, and freshly ground black pepper. The light sprinkling of salt over the tomato and olive oil is essential to bring the flavors together.

Espadrilles: The term espadrille is French and derives from espardenya, which derives from espart, the Catalan name for esparto, a tough, wiry Mediterranean grass used in making rope. Espadrilles have been made in Catalonia since the 14th century at least, and there are Catalonian shops still in existence that have been making espadrilles for over a century. Traditional espadrilles have a canvas upper with the toe and vamp cut in one piece, and seamed to the rope sole at the sides. Often they would have laces at the throat that would be wrapped around the ankle to hold the shoes securely in place. Early espadrilles were worn by both men and women.

Modern espadrilles
Once peasant footwear, espadrilles have grown in popularity, especially in Catalonia and the Basque Country, where many men and women wear them during the spring and summer months. Espadrilles can now be found designed by top designers such as Donna Karan, Pare Gabia etc. Modern espadrilles are predominantly for women, though some men's shoes are made in this style.

De spits is afgebeten... we zijn vertrokken uit de startblokken!
Best wel een spannende dag.
Deze middag haalde ik Angels & Josep op aan de luchthaven. Onze Spaanse gasten kwamen perfect op tijd aan, zo hadden zij nog de kans om Beveren in de namiddag te verkennen.
Opnieuw naar de luchthaven... want ja hoor, ook onze Finse vrienden waren er al.

Samen hadden we deze avond een heerlijk typisch Vlaamse maaltijd. (Dankjewel Elly om deze klaar te maken!) Witloof in de oven... best wel grappig om de discussie over de groenten te horen. Er kwamen zelfs prenten aan te pas om uitgelegd te krijgen wat we nu eigenlijk aten.

Benieuwd wat het morgen zal worden. Met nog enkele nieuwe gasten erbij.

Eindelijk! Na heel lang wachten hebben we het nieuws gekregen dat ons Europees project goed gekeurd is. Dus vanaf vandaag staat GBS Kallo "live" in contact met een lagere school in Spanje, Finland en in het Verenigd Koninkrijk.

De eerste meeting heeft plaats in België. Van 14 - 18 november worden daar de buitenlandse gasten ontvangen! Welkom!

Vandaag de definitieve versie van ons dossier binnen gekregen. Het is nu klaar om voor het einde van de maand richting agentschap te sturen.

Got the final version of our application today. Now it’s ready to be sent to the agency before the end of the month.

Mailtje binnen gekregen van het centrum Ruyckevelde met daarin de reactie op ons dossier. 't Zag er volgens hen goed uit. Yes! Nog enkele aanmerkingen die we nog kunnen aanpassen of moeten verduidelijken. Die opmerkingen zijn ook richting Engeland (Paul - coördinator) vertrokken.
Alles moet binnen zijn voor 31 maart... dat komt ook al dichterbij!

Got an email from the Ruyckevelde-centre with a few remarks on our application. They said it looked good. Yes! Just a few more things we should adapt or clarify. So I sent the feedback to England (Paul - coordinator). Everything should be ready by March 31… which is coming nearer!

JOEPIE! Donderdag liep ons dossier via mail binnen. Er werd heel wat werk in gestoken door Paul. Chique! Vandaag de versie doorgestuurd naar Ruyckevelde, zij zullen het met een kritisch oog bekijken. EN een kritisch oordeel vellen of we al dan niet een kans maken op een goedkeuring van het nationale agentschap.
Je kan je niet voorstellen hoe spannend ik dit alles vind...
Duimen jullie even mee? Zorg er wel voor dat je geen kramp krijgt in je duimen, want het duurt nog tot eind augustus vooraleer we nieuws krijgen...

HURRAY! We submitted our application by mail last Thursday. Paul put a lot of work into it. Great! I sent the version to Ruyckevelde today and they’ll look at it with a critical eye. AND they’ll judge whether or not we have a shot at getting approved by the national agency…You can’t imagine how exciting this is for me…Everyone keep their fingers crossed, ok? Make sure you don’t get any cramp because it’ll be the end of August before we get any news…

Project voorgesteld aan de verantwoordelijken van de gemeente. Die leken toch ook enthousiast. 'k Kan al bijna niet meer wachten om van start te gaan. Jammer dat we nog een aantal maanden geduld moeten opbrengen voor we zekerheid hebben.
Deze middag mijn hoofd gebroken over de formulering van een aantal dingen die noodzakelijk zijn voor het aanvraagformulier. De Nederlandse versie lukt me wel, deze avond trek ik nog even aan de messenger-mouw van A. om me te helpen vertalen. Toch fantastisch dat ik daar terecht kan!
Daarna stuur ik alles door naar Paul (de coördinator) & vertellen we hem over 't bestaan van deze blog...

Presented the project to those responsible at the community. They seemed enthusiastic. I can’t wait to get started. A shame we’ll have to be patient for a few more months until we know for certain.Spent the afternoon driving myself crazy on how to formulate certain things for the application form. The Dutch version isn’t much of a problem, but I’ll have to pull on A’s messenger-sleeve to help me translate. Great to have such a help!
After that, I’ll send everything to Paul (the coordinator) and tell him about the existence of this blog...

(Een uurtje geleden kende ik een blog enkel op een onbewuste manier & dus niet bij naam.)
